Why We Exist: When a New HVAC System Made the Mold Problem Worse

This is part of our "Why We Exist" series, where we share real stories from the field that shaped how we build every Haven & Stone home.

One family came to us after years of searching for answers.

Their home had a history of water damage and had already undergone multiple mold remediation projects. Hoping to solve the problem once and for all, they invested in a brand-new HVAC system just one year before we became involved. They believed replacing the system would finally give them clean, healthy air.

Unfortunately, it didn't.

What We Found During Our Investigation

During our investigation, we discovered the new HVAC system had been improperly installed. Portions of the ductwork had never been properly sealed, allowing the system to draw hot, humid air from unconditioned spaces. That moisture was introduced directly into the HVAC system, creating the ideal environment for mold growth. Every time the system turned on, it had the potential to circulate contaminants throughout the home.

Instead of solving the problem, the new HVAC system had become part of it.

The family continued to struggle with health symptoms despite investing tens of thousands of dollars in previous remediation efforts and a complete HVAC replacement. They had done what any homeowner would do — they hired licensed professionals and trusted that the work had been completed correctly.

It hadn't.

What struck me most was that the equipment wasn't the failure. The installation was.

The Philosophy This Reinforced

That experience reinforced one of the core philosophies behind Haven & Stone Homes: the quality of a home depends just as much on how it's built as it does on what it's built with.

That's why we don't simply specify high-performance products — we verify they're installed correctly.

How We Build Differently

Throughout every Haven & Stone build, we perform additional quality assurance inspections beyond what is typically required by building code. Our team verifies critical details throughout construction, including HVAC installation, duct sealing, ventilation pathways, moisture management, flashing, air sealing, plumbing penetrations, and other building science details that can have a lasting impact on the home's performance.

These inspections are designed to catch problems before drywall is installed and before they become hidden behind finished walls.

We believe that preventing failures is far better than repairing them years later.

Because even the highest-quality HVAC equipment, windows, or building materials cannot perform as intended if they're installed incorrectly. Our commitment to additional quality assurance is one of the ways we help ensure every Haven & Stone home delivers the healthy, durable, and high-performing environment our homeowners expect.

It's not just about building a beautiful home.

It's about building it right the first time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a new HVAC system still cause mold problems? Yes. Equipment quality doesn't guarantee performance — improper installation, such as unsealed ductwork drawing in hot, humid air from unconditioned spaces, can turn even a brand-new HVAC system into a source of moisture and mold growth.

What makes Haven & Stone's building process different? We perform quality assurance inspections beyond standard code requirements throughout construction — verifying HVAC installation, duct sealing, ventilation pathways, moisture management, flashing, and plumbing penetrations before drywall goes up and those details become hidden.

Why does installation matter as much as the equipment itself? Even the highest-quality HVAC systems, windows, or building materials can't perform as intended if they're installed incorrectly. A healthy home depends on verifying the work, not just specifying good products.

Concerned your home's HVAC system may not have been installed correctly? Schedule a consultation with Haven & Stone to learn how our building science inspections catch problems before they become expensive, hidden, or hazardous.
